Couples Counseling in Arlington, Virginia

Stress, one’s work situation, raising kids, personality conflicts, infidelity, and other issues can often put a strain on couples. Often, people have ideas of the perfect couple, but the reality is that long-term relationships require commitment, work, and dedication.

At Summit Counseling, we use proven, evidence-based techniques and methods to work with couples, backed by our combined experience.

Our Counseling Approach

Experience and Dedication

Our therapists are certified in Emotionally-Focused Therapy, or EFT, a humanistic approach that has been tried and tested. Originally conceived in the 1980s, EFT concerns theories of adult attachment, a developmental theory of personality and relationships. Through this approach, therapists have explored bonding and relationship dysfunctions, with the individual desire for love, affection, and bonding being at the core of interventions.

In EFT, individuals explore their relational and social needs in a safe environment, focusing on managing and regulating emotions and interactions with partners and loved ones. Rather than approach a couple with the idea that something is wrong with them, the EFT approach instead uses techniques that encourage self and relationship exploration.

One of the main goals is to help couples arrive at a point where they recognize their emotional bonds and strengthen their relationships and communication. Techniques such as de-escalating conflict, restructuring emotional communication, and replacing negative patterns are an important part of EFT.

Committed to diversity

While things have come a long way in our society, many couples still face issues related to racism, gender bias, and other forms of pressure and discrimination.

At Summit Counseling, we recognize that love is love, and we embrace the diversity of couples. We are equally happy and committed to work with couples of any gender orientation and relationships from all walks of life.

In the past, we have specialized in supporting diverse individuals and couples. Find out how we can help you today!
